Tennis Coaching

Our tennis coaching team provides lessons organised into 3 month courses starting in January, April and September. Courses for juniors and minis are on Saturdays mornings, Sunday Mornings and Monday afternoons, those for adults are on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Individual coaching is also available at other times and junior camps are run in the school holidays. Click below for Coaching Rates and a Coaching Registration Form which give details of dates, times and cost.

Adult group coaching lessons are on Monday evenings at 6:30 for Beginners and at 7:30 for Improvers.  On Wednesday evenings the lesson at 6:30 is for Beginners and Improvers.

Adult Beginners receive a number of group coaching sessions within their initial subscription fee. The number depends on when in the year they join the club.

Junior coaching takes place every Saturday morning between 11:00 and 12:00 and on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30.  Juniors (11 – 18) use normal (yellow) tennis balls.

Mini-Tennis is for juniors who are 10 years and under. The emphasis is very much on fun and movement whilst giving a gentle introduction to the basic strokes and concepts of tennis. Soft balls are used, which get to be more lively as age (and ability) increases. Although ages are approximate, those aged 8 and under use RED balls, 8-9 ORANGE balls and 9-10 GREEN balls.

Mini-Tennis coaching takes place every Saturday morning between 9:00 and 11:00, 9:00 for Mini Red and 10:00 for Mini Orange/Green and on Monday evenings, 4:45 for Mini Red and 5:30 for Mini Orange/Green. In Spring and Summer we also run a Mini Red class on Sunday mornings at 9:00. Our coach believes 60 minutes is too long for under 8’s, therefore, Mini Red sessions are 45 minutes duration instead of the usual 60 minutes and are correspondingly cheaper.

Undoubtedly one-to-one coaching is the best and fastest way to improve your shots. You get to choose what you want to work on and you get the coach’s undivided attention. It is worth considering what topics you’ld like the coach to work with you on beforehand so that you get the most from the session. NOTE: Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be subject to a cancellation fee as shown on the Coaching Rates notice.

As an alternative to individual coaching, you can always get one, two or three players to join you and share the cost.

NOTE: Refunds for non-completion of a course will not be given except in the case of severe injury or illness. However, the coach will consider crediting players who miss one or two lessons for good reason. Should lessons be cancelled by the coach due to bad weather or his non-availability, he will reschedule the lessons if possible. If that is not possible, credit will be carried forward to the next course.

We’ve changed how you book your coaching course…

To try to reduce the load on our volunteers who do the administration for the club, we’re now hosting our Coaching Courses on ClubSpark, the same platform we use for booking tennis courts.   This includes the Cardio Tennis course on Tuesdays.

Click on the link below to select a course and register.  When you click on the “Book now” button, you’ll be asked to log in to your LTA account.

If you’re not already an LTA member, you’ll need to create an account by clicking on the indicated link.   If you’re a player, select Advantage Play but choose Advantage Fan if you’re a parent booking for a child.

One major change is that we can no longer be as flexible as we used to be in selecting dates that you don’t want to play.  You must pay for the whole course, however, you’ll get credits for sessions that are cancelled for any reason such as bad weather.  These will appear when you book your next course.

Prices are the same as last term and you’ll get a lower rate if you’re a Crowthorne Tennis Club member.

Places must be booked in advance via the Members’ Area and selections will then be confirmed on the morning or evening before the event.  Please do not turn up if you have not been selected as you will be turned away. Players are selected on a first come first serve basis usually in multiples of 4 players.  Note that none of these sessions is suitable for beginners.

  • Note that the Committee tries to accommodate the wishes of members, within the constraints of time and 4 courts, but a session for each ability level is the guiding principle.
    • The Friday session is for recreational and higher players and runs from 6pm to 8pm
    • The Thursday 5:30 session is for intermediate players and runs from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
    • The Thursday 7:30 session is for intermediate and advanced players including potential team players and runs from 7:30 to 9:30pm.
    • The Tuesday session is for advanced players and runs from 7pm to 9pm.
    • In all cases you must commit to the full two hours.
  • Before the session you will have been told by the organiser your starting court, your partner and your opponents.
    • These will take into account each player’s normal playing standard with the best players starting on court 1 and, with 16 players, the least able players on court 4.  However, the organiser may occasionally decide to organise it differently such as a “lucky dip” for starting court & partner.
    • In addition, for the Thursday 7:30 session, the organiser will take into account any pairings for matches at the coming weekend.
  • Play is split into 3 rounds lasting 40 minutes each.  Play 1 set with normal deuce scoring.  If you finish early either carry on or mix in your 4.
    • If you haven’t finished the set after 40 minutes and the scores are level, play a sudden death point
  • At the end of the 40 minutes the winners of the first set played move up a court, the losers move down a court (court 1 is the top court). Winners on the top court stay, as do the losers on the bottom court. If you didn’t finish your set then the pair winning at the time moves up.
  • Pairs then split partners with the pair joining them and you play a second round.
    • Partners are selected by spinning rackets or using common sense to try to get a balanced 4.
  • Exactly the same happens for the third round.

Drop-In club nights are, as the name implies, more informal sessions than the bookable ones and you can arrive and leave when you like.  Those attending organise themselves, changing who plays with whom after most present have completed a set, although there’s often a more senior member present who  will take charge if needed.

We are currently running 2 Drop-In  sessions for all levels from Starter upwards…

  • The Tuesday session has recently been rebranded for All Levels and runs from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  If you want to sit out and watch, maybe with a drink, you can do that too.  If you’ve arrived early for the 7 o’clock session, you’re also welcome to join in.
  • The Wednesday session is for all levels of player including beginner and usually runs from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
    • You can expect members attending adult coaching to join in.

This is a template for a popup activated by a link anywhere on the website.

Pop-up settings are from the LH gearwheel at the bottom left.

More settings from RH menu bottom right.

  • Display Conditions: Include Entire Site
  • Triggers: Default – all NO
  • Advanced Rules: Default – all NO
    • Show on devices: Default shows on all but can remove, say, mobile. if required.

In Pop-up Settings Advanced tab, under Open by selector, add anchor trigger shortcode – a[href=”#link-popup”].  Make sure you DON’T CHECK open in new tab.

Apply this link (#link-popup) anywhere on website.

If you try to duplicate this from the list of popups, it turns into a page.  This is a fault that was flagged up over a year ago but not yet fixed.  There are several ways round, one is…

  • Export popup to a file
  • Import the same file
  • It appears with the same name but different date so change the name.
  • Need to change Display Conditions to Include Entire Site as this is lost.  Otherwise OK.
