Crowthorne Mixed 1 leads Division 3B after 3 rounds with two wins and a losing draw. At the end of July, Matt Paxton and Tina Stern led the way to a 3-1 win away against Wargrave 2. Paxton & Stern won 6-2 6-1 against Clare Belton & Paul Mcdonald and followed this with a 6-1 6-3 win against Elizabeth Hindley & Tony Rudelhoff. Jenny Sheppard & Mark Callaghan had a 6-4 6-3 win against Hindley & Rudelhoff but lost 1 and 2 to the Wargrave number 1 pair. At the beginning of August, the team were unlucky to come away from Caversham Park with just one point, having finished all square on rubbers, sets and games only to lose the deciding shootout from 8-3 up. Andy Sayer & Emma Knowles had straight set wins in both of their matches, 6-4 6-2 against Logan Turner & Judy King and 6-3 6-0 against Howard Willis & Esther Rodriguez. However, although Lorraine Fowler & Mark Lardner battled hard against Rodriguez & Willis, they lost 4-6 5-7 and they found Turner & King a much harder proposition, losing 1 and 0. On 1st September, the team faced Sonning 1 at home and, although the final result was a 3-1 win for the Crows, the first round was a battle for both pairs. Matt Paxton & Emma Knowles won a long three-setter against Tim Armitage & Catherine Botwright, taking the first set 7-6 on a tie-break, losing the second 2-6 but recovering to take the third 7-5. Meanwhile, Richard McCully & Tina Stern had a perfect start taking the first set 6-0 against Cameron & Sheila Scott but they had to fight in the second to win it 7-6 on a tie-break. Paxton & Knowles made sure of the three points winning 6-4 6-0 against the Scotts while McCully & Stern went down 3-6 1-6 to Armitage & Botwright in a rubber that didn’t matter.
Crowthorne Mixed 2 have had a tough start to the season, losing their first two matches, against Home Park and Bradfield, 0-4. However, in their latest match, away against Berkshire County Sports 2, they got their first win, 3-1, and by quite a margin. Mark Callaghan & Ravinder Norman started with an excellent 6-2 6-4 win over John Mcdonald & Sarah Quant and followed it up with a 1 and 0 win against John Dunford & Sue Beasley. Peter Lindholm & Pauline Snell had already put Dunford & Beasley to the sword 6-2 6-0 in the first round so their 2 and 1 losss to Mcdonald & Quant in the second was irrelevant.
Crowthorne Mixed 3 have also had a difficult start, losing 0-4 against Windsor 3 and 1-3 against Slough 2, so their latest 3-1 win, away against Sonning 2, came as a relief. However, the 0-4 final score against Windsor hides an extraordinary match with four tie-breaks, all of which were unfortunately lost by the Crows side. Andrew Lewis & Jenny Partridge lost 0-6 6-4 6-7 against the Sonning first pair, Peter Buck & Liz Bojarczuk, nearly a great comeback after a poor start. Andrew Morrison & Penny Hemingway lost 1-6 1-6 against Pierre Fourie & Lesley Small, never really being in contention, but they bounced back well, pushing Buck & Bojarczuk all the way, but losing 3-6 6-2 6-7. Meanwhile, Lewis & Partridge were losing their second rubber 6-2 6-7 6-7 against Fourie & Small. Against Sonning 2, Jenny Partridge teamed up with Andrew Morrison and they won against Jenny Taylor & Brian Scott 3-6 6-4 6-0. Linda Diessner & Nathan Osborn lost 1-6 3-6 against Linda Burton & Matthew Bayliss-Binks but both Crows pairs won their matches in the second round, Diessner & Osborn 7-5 6-7 6-4 against Taylor & Scott and Partridge & Morrison 6-4 6-1 against Burton & Bayliss-Binks, to make it a hard won 3-1 win for the Crows! So a win at last for Mixed 3 and good to see a number of new faces in the teams.
