Sunday 30 January
A full day for Crowthorne TC with 3 Men’s matches and 4 Junior matches.
Men’s 1 were away to Wargrave 1 in Division 2 and, after a close match, they came away with 3 points from a 3-1 win, their first points since the opening day of the winter season. John Phillips/Luke Tearall lost a close first rubber 3-6 5-7 to Jeremy Morgan/John Winston but Russell Finch/James Brennan won both of their rubbers on deciding tie-breaks, the first 6-4 3-6 1-0 against Tim Janisch/Kieran Martin-Davis and the second 6-3 1-6 1-0 against Morgan/Winston. Phillips/Tearall came good in the end to win 7-6 6-2 against Janisch/Martin-Davis and secure the points for Crowthorne.
There was no joy for Men’s 2 who lost 0-4 at home against a strong BCS 2 side in Division 4. Matt Paxton/Chris Torkington and Jake Griffiths/Dave Smith lost all of their rubbers in straight sets, although both pairs lost a set 5-7 against the visitors’ 2nd pair and might have salvaged a point on another day.
Men’s 3 had another win in Division 6W, although they had to work a bit harder for this 3-1 win away at Shinfield than on their last outing. It wasn’t a perfect start with Steve Stow/Simon Usher losing 6-7 4-6 against Tony Williams/Paul Tucson but David Stone/Andy Valner’s 6-0 6-1 win against Diptendra Ghosh/Dave Herries levelled the tie. Stone/Valner continued their fine form to win 6-3 6-1 against Williams/Tucson but it took a deciding tie-break for Stow/Usher to clinch all 3 points as they finished with a 6-1 4-6 1-0 win against Ghosh/Herries. The win puts them in the second promotion spot with two matches to play; against top team Caversham 4 and Riseley 3.
Both 18U Boys and both 14U Boys teams were due to play at Crowthorne so the courts were full for most of the daylight hours. However, Windsor called off their visit to play our 14U 2 team late on Saturday so this will probably be a walkover for the Crows.
18U Boys 1 had a repeat of their summer fixture against Latika A and we again had the bizarre situation of Seb Edwards playing for Crowthorne against Jacques Edwards who has elected to play for Latika. Seb Edwards/Ollie Walker were no match for Latika’s Jacques Edwards/Samuel Vassello and the match was lost 3-0.
18U Boys 2 were up against Riseley and William Maynard/Arlo Filley beat James Rix/Oliver Rix 3-0, losing just 12 games in the process.
It was a good day also for 14U Boys 1 who beat Peppard 3-0, William Long/Josh Date losing just 3 games against Benjamin Griffiths/Stanley Lawrence.
Sunday 23 January
Mixed 1 had a trip to Maidenhead to play their 2nd team in Division 3 amd came away with 2 points from an excellent winning 2-2 draw. Matt Paxton/Tina Stern could do little against Robert Castignetti/Nasreen Brittain, losing 3-6 2-6 but Pete Walker/Jenny Sheppard levelled the tie winning 7-6 7-6 against Richard Healey/Susan Carter. Paxton/Stern were dominant against Healey/Carter, winning 6-2 6-3 but Walker/Sheppard put in another excellent performance in taking the 2nd set against Castignetti/Brittain, despite eventually losing 1-6 6-4 0-1 to make it a 5 sets to 4 win for the Crows, their first win of the season.
Mixed 2 were at home to Caversham 3 in Division 4 and they did well to win a single rubber in their 1-3 defeat against a strong team. The one successs was Andrew Morrison/Wendy Miles 6-3 4-6 1-0 win against Alec Briggs/Clara Bouffard.
Saturday 15 January
Ladies’ 1 faced some strong players away to Marlow 1 in Division 3 but, although they lost 1-3, they nearly came away with a point from a losing draw. Tina Stern/Cath Sillitoe couldn’t make any impact against Carol Charlett/Alison Stevens and, in fact, 3-6 3-6 was a decent score against a very strong pair. Alison Nicholson/Maggie Ingham won the first set against Miranda Robson/Emily Grainger but lost 6-4 2-6 0-1. Nicholson/Ingham lost 0 & 0 against Charlett/Stevens before Stern/Sillitoe restored some pride for the Crows with a 6-2 6-4 win against Robson/Grainger.
Ladies’ 2 travelled to Maidenhead to play their 6th team in Division 7 and did well to come away with 2 points from a 2-2 draw. Jenny Sheppard/Ravinder Norman were unlucky to lose the first rubber 4-6 6-3 0-1 to Vanessa Russell/Lisa Swanson but Jenny Partridge.Wendy Miles were dominant in their 6-0 6-3 win against Su Reid/Claudine Talbott. Sheppard/Norman lost another deciding tie-break in their 6-7 3-6 0-1 defeat by Reid/Talbott but Partridge/Miles won their’s as they beat Russell/Swanson 4-6 6-4 1-0 to win the match by a set.
Sunday 9 January
The new year started with a full line-up of Men’s matches and Men’s 1 away at Caversham Park against their 1st team in Division 2. It was always going to be a tough ask away to the division leaders and so it turned out with James Brennan/Russell Finch losing 2-6 4-6 to the home 1st pair Laurence Costello/Jonathan Tait in the first round. John Phillips/Guy Smith-Bingham, however, squeezed a win in a very close rubber 5-7 7-5 1-0 against John Thornhill/James Springett to give the Crows a glimmer of a chance. But they also lost to Costello/Tait, although 6-7 3-6 was a pretty respectable score, leaving Brennan/Finch to try to salvage a point against Thornhill/Springett. This they nearly did in another close rubber, losing 5-7 7-6 0-1 to make the final result a 3-1 win for Caversham Park.
Men’s 2 were at home to Maidenhead 5 in Division 4 and they also had a close match, eventually losing by 3 games in a 2-2 losing draw. Matt Paxton/Dave Smith had a good start for the Crows, winning 6-4 3-6 1-0 against Simon & Joseph Brittain. Jake Griffiths/Josh Furneaux made it 2-0 winning 6-4 7-6 against Iain Hopes/Toby Wheeler before it all went wrong in the second round. After winning the first set, Paxton/Smith lost the second and the deciding tie-break to lose 6-4 5-7 0-1 to Hopes/Wheeler and Griffiths/Furneaux lost 3-6 4-6 to Brittain/Brittain.
It was an easy morning for Men’s 3, however, when only 2 players turned up for Wargrave 5 for their match in Division 6 W. Ollie & Peter Walker won 6-0 6-1 against Chris Belton/Richard Etheridge and then Rob Hughes/Steve Stow won 6-1 6-1 against the same pair making the result a 4-0 win for the loss of 3 games.
