Sunday 28 November

Mixed 1 faced a strong Riseley 1 team in Division 3 and were unlucky to lose 0-4 when at least a 2-2 loss was a realistic possibility.  Matt Paxton/Cath Sillitoe put in strong performances against Mark Elliot/Gill Stoney and Shane Leather/Helen Townsend but were beaten by both pairs in close 2 set rubbers.  Andy Valner/Maggie Ingham lost two up and down rubbers, losing the deciding tie-break in both with scores 1-6 6-3 0-1 and 0-6 6-0 0-1.

Mixed 2 were away against Maidenhead 3 in Division 4 and lost 1-3, but they also missed chances to win the tie. Mark Callaghan/Ali Nicholson didn’t start well, losing 1-6 2-6 to Dave Scarborough/Sally Markham, but Andrew Morrison/Penny Hemingway put in a fighting performance in losing 5-7 4-6 to Richard Hedley/Vanessa Russell.  In the second round, it was a similar story to the 1st team with both rubbers going to deciding tie-breaks, Morrison/Hemingway losing 6-4 4-6 0-1 while Callaghan/Nicholson won 6-3 3-6 1-0, salvaging some pride for the Crows.  Two close matches with nothing to show at the end!

Boys 12U had a trip to Windsor to play their B team in Division 2 and were well beaten 3-0.  Nicholas Coia-Evans lost a tight first set 6-7  against Thomas Williams but fell away badly to lose the second 0-6, while Leandro Robinson was losing 0 & 0 to Joshua Southgate.  In the doubles, the Windsor pair won 1 & 1.

Sunday 21 November

Ladies’ 2 had a short trip to Wellington College to play their 3rd team in Division 7 and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point, instead losing 1-3.  Jemmy Partridge/Wendy Miles had a good start for the Crows, winning 6-3 6-4 against Janet Gozzard/Linda Parsley, however, Alison Nicholson/Delyth Lynch lost by the same score to Wendy Dacey/Christine Hayter to make it all square at the halfway point.  In the second round, Nicholson/Lynch fought back strongly to take the second set 6-0 after losing the first 3-6 only to lose the deciding tie-break against Gozzard/Parsley.  Partridge/Miles also lost their first set 3-6, won the second 7-5 but also lost their deciding tie-break against Dacey/Hayter to make it a disappointing afternoon for the Crows.

It was another 3-0 win for Boys 18U 1 in Division 1, this time against DL Royal Berks B, who were unable to turn out 2 players.  Consequently. Jonathan Snyman beat Oliver Checkiewicz 6-1 6-1 while Jake Griffiths didn’t get to play a match.  With our team getting a walkover in their last outing, they’ll be looking forward to meeting a full team in their next match!

Saturday 20 November

Ladies’ 1 faced Twyford 1 in Division 3 and lost 1-3, although on another day they might have made it a 2-2 losing draw.  Cath Sillitoe/Penny Hemingway fought hard against Keren Bailey/Karen McKenzie, losing 5-7 3-6 and with Ravinder Norman/Jenny Sheppard losing 2 & 1 to Anna Cowdry/Sally Brinkley, the outlook was bleak at the halfway point.  Although Sillitoe/Hemingway kept Crowthorne’s hopes alive winning 3-6 6-3 1-0 against Cowdry/Brinkley, Norman/Sheppard could make no impact against Bailey/McKenzie, losing 3-6 0-6.

Sunday 14 November

Men’s 1 were at home in Division 2 against Bracknell 1 and, in their first rubber, James Brennan & David Smith were surprised to find themselves facing Andy Fryatt & Lewis Sullivan, the latter having declined a position in the Crowthorne team due to pressure of work!   Unsurprisingly Brennan/Smith lost 0 & 1.  John Phillips/Luke Tearall were unlucky not to win an incredibly close match against the visitors’ 2nd pair, Richard Stevenson/George Spanswick, eventually losing 6-7 7-6 0-1.  With Brennan/Smith losing 0 & 0 to Stevenson/Spanswick, Phillips/Tearall put up a good fight in losing 2-6 6-7 to Fryatt/Sullivan to make the final score 0-4.

Men’s 2 were away to Bracknell 3 in Division 4 and they were unlucky to lose 1-3.   Matt Paxton/Peter Walker took Paul O’Mahony/Oscar Wroblewski to a tie-break but eventually lost 7-5 4-6 0-1 but Jake Griffiths/Julian Blackshaw levelled the match with a 6-1 2-6 1-0 win aaginstMark O’Donnell/Adrian Draffin.  However, both Bracknell pairs managed to win their second round rubbers in close straight sets to take the win.

As in the previous round, Men’s 3 were the only winners with another 2-2 winning draw in Division 6W, this time away at Phyllis Court.  Steve Stow/Andy Valner only just lost 4-6 4-6 against Chris Aspden/David Kadarauch but Simon Usher/Ollie Walker squeezed through 6-4 4-6 1-0 against Hulian Francis/Alex Templer.  The score was mirrored in their 4-6 6-4 0-1 loss to Aspden/Kadarauch but Stow/Valner won 6-3 6-2 against Francis/Templer to win the match by 3 games.

Our Boys 12U team had a tough tie against Latika in Division 2, Nicholas Coia-Evans and Leandro Robinson losing their rubbers in straight sets for a 0-3 loss.

Sunday 7 November

Mixed 1‘s season started with a difficult away match at Ascot in Division 3 which they lost 0-4.  It wasn’t as one-sided as the score suggests. though, as Matt Paxton/Tina Stern only just lost their first rubber 3-6 6-3 0-1 to Adrian Camp/Georgie Magrath.  Richard McCully/Jenny Sheppard lost their first rubber 4-6 0-6 to Louis Hunting/Sandra Bohling and their second 3 & 3 to Camp/Magrath.  But Paxton/Tern had another close one losing 3-6 5-7 to Hunting Bohling.

It was a 0-4 loss as well for Mixed 2 at home to Caversham 2 in Division 4,  Mark Callaghan/Ali Nicholson and Andrew Morrison/Jenny Partridge losing all 4 rubbers quite conclusively in straight sets.

Seb Edwards and Ollie Walker playing for Boys 18U 1 had a 3-0 walkover in Division 1B when one of Riseley’s team was injured ahead of their match, but in Division 2, Boys 18U 2 won 3-0 against Latika B, David Kruger winning 6-2 6-1 against Tom Broadbent and Will Maynard beating Oliver Horman 6-4 6-4 before they won 3 & 2 in the doubles.

Boys 14U 1, with Josh Date and Ben Walker, were less successful, however, losing 0-3 to Latika A in Division 1B.

Places must be booked in advance via the Members’ Area and selections will then be confirmed on the morning or evening before the event.  Please do not turn up if you have not been selected as you will be turned away. Players are selected on a first come first serve basis usually in multiples of 4 players.  Note that none of these sessions is suitable for beginners.

  • Note that the Committee tries to accommodate the wishes of members, within the constraints of time and 4 courts, but a session for each ability level is the guiding principle.
    • The Friday session is for recreational and higher players and runs from 6pm to 8pm
    • The Thursday 5:30 session is for intermediate players and runs from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
    • The Thursday 7:30 session is for intermediate and advanced players including potential team players and runs from 7:30 to 9:30pm.
    • The Tuesday session is for advanced players and runs from 7pm to 9pm. 
    • In all cases you must commit to the full two hours.
  • Before the session you will have been told by the organiser your starting court, your partner and your opponents.
    • These will take into account each player’s normal playing standard with the best players starting on court 1 and, with 16 players, the least able players on court 4.  However, the organiser may occasionally decide to organise it differently such as a “lucky dip” for starting court & partner.
    • In addition, for the Thursday 7:30 session, the organiser will take into account any pairings for matches at the coming weekend.
  • Play is split into 3 rounds lasting 40 minutes each.  Play 1 set with normal deuce scoring.  If you finish early either carry on or mix in your 4.
    • If you haven’t finished the set after 40 minutes and the scores are level, play a sudden death point
  • At the end of the 40 minutes the winners of the first set played move up a court, the losers move down a court (court 1 is the top court). Winners on the top court stay, as do the losers on the bottom court. If you didn’t finish your set then the pair winning at the time moves up.
  • Pairs then split partners with the pair joining them and you play a second round.
    • Partners are selected by spinning rackets or using common sense to try to get a balanced 4.
  • Exactly the same happens for the third round.

Drop-In club nights are, as the name implies, more informal sessions than the bookable ones and you can arrive and leave when you like.  Those attending organise themselves, changing who plays with whom after most present have completed a set, although there’s often a more senior member present who  will take charge if needed.

We are currently running 2 Drop-In  sessions for all levels from Starter upwards…

  • The Tuesday session has recently been rebranded for All Levels and runs from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  If you want to sit out and watch, maybe with a drink, you can do that too.  If you’ve arrived early for the 7 o’clock session, you’re also welcome to join in.
  • The Wednesday session is for all levels of player including beginner and usually runs from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
    • You can expect members attending adult coaching to join in.
  • The Sunday session is for All levels and runs from 3:00 – 5:00pm.

  • Import the same file
  • It appears with the same name but different date so change the name.
  • Need to change Display Conditions to Include Entire Site as this is lost.  Otherwise OK.
