Road to Wimbledon is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all 14U players the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world famous grass courts at Wimbledon. Local clubs, parks and schools are encouraged to enter and stage a tournament for their members/pupils rated between 10.2 and 7.1.
The first Crowthorne TC only “Road to Wimbledon” tournament was held at the club on 25 May this year. Previous tournaments have involved other clubs as well but we had just enough players from our club to run a tournament from which the winner will proceed to the County round at Cantley in July. Five players took part and the weather was perfect. It started at 3pm and ended at 6pm which was a lot of tennis for Harvey Dougan and Charlie Chalmers who only joined the club the previous week-end at the Open Day, and had never played a proper match before!
The match format was a timed duration of 20 minutes with sudden death on deuce to decide game result.
As expected Jake Griffiths won all his matches and, having won the tournament overall, will go forward to the County round at Cantley in July. After 3 matches George and Harvey had each won 2 of their matches, so their head to head in the final round was the decider for the runner-up position which is the reserve for the county round. George beat Harvey 5-1 so earnt the reserve spot.
