Mixed 1 just edged out by Bisham 1

Crowthorne 1 v Bisham Abbey 1
Crowthorne put out a strong 1st team at the weekend to face Bisham Abbey 1 in Division 3 but they were beaten in a 2-2 draw by just 3 games.  David Smith & Emma Knowles faced a strong Bisham 1st pair in Adam Kemp & Georgina Lloyd-Parry but, having lost the first set 4-6, they took the second 6-2 and won the deciding tie-break.  Chris Torkington & Tina Stern also had a close first match, winning the first set 7-6 against Mark Chester & Caro Graham but dropping the second 4-6 before losing the tie-break.  In the second round Smith & Knowles continued their winning ways with a 6-4 6-3 win against Chester & Graham but Torkington & Stern were unable to make any impression on Kemp & Lloyd-Parry, losing 1-6 2-6 to make it a win for the visitors by 40 games to 37.  However, a point against Bisham Abbey 1 is a point very well earned and it augurs well for the rest of the winter.

Bracknell 3 v Crowthorne 3  by Alison Nicholson
The first match of the winter season saw Crowthorne 3 drawn against local club Bracknell 3 in Division 6.  On a strangely warm day in October, when we arrived to see  our own Adrian Draffin against us, things didn’t look too good.  However, Alison Nicholson & Peter Lindholm, playing as Crowthorne’s No 1 pair, started strongly and managed a win against Adrian and his partner Susan Middleton, winning 4 and 3.  On the other court, though, Stuart Fowler and Annie Atkins found the consistent lobbing and accurate net play of Bracknell’s second pair, Tim Kingcott & Val Ratcliffe, too much, and they lost 4 and 0.

So half way through it was one rubber all, the sun was coming through, and it felt more like a summer’s day.  Alison and Peter also found the very different style of play of Bracknell’s second pair rather tricky, losing the first set to 3 and quickly going 0-3 down.  Then a change of tactics and a consistent aiming at the opposition’s backhand side meant that Alison and Peter won 6 games in a row, to take the second set 6-3.  Into the tie break, and it was tentative play all round, but a very tight breaker meant that Alison and Peter had one match point – but lost it, and lost the tie-break 10-8.   On the other court, Adrian and his partner were very solid and Annie and Stuart got just 4 games. So it was a win to Bracknell 3 rubbers to 1, and no points yet for Crowthorne’s 3rd team.  An enjoyable match though.
