Mixed 1 finishes with two wins in Summer league

Crowthorne Mixed 1 finished with 2 wins in the Summer League to keep them in Division 3B but Mixed 2 were left in  the second relegation slot in Division 4B despite getting a point against Wokingham 4 after Caversham 4 leapfrogged them into 4th place with a 4-0 thrashing of BCS.

Crowthorne sent a strong 1st team to Bracknell on 16th September to play their 3rd team and they didn’t drop a set in their 4-0 win. David Smith & Tina Stern won 6-3 6-2 against Edward Barnard & Noreen Bedford and Mark Lardner & Jenny Sheppard won 6-3 6-4 against Simon Putner & Val Ratcliffe to put them in a strong position after the first round.  Our pairs found the opposition tougher in the second round but still managed straight sets win with Lardner & Sheppard winning 7-5 6-2 while Smith & Stern won 6-1 7-6 to complete the 3 point win.

On the same day our 2nds played Wokingham 4 at home in Division 4B and they were unlucky to come away with just a point after sharing the rubbers but losing 35-36 on games.  Peter Lindholm & Alison Nicholson won 6-3 6-0 against & Tony Allen & Debbie Wright, but Stuart Fowler & Jenny Partridge went down 1-6 2-6 against the strong second pair of Steve Lea & Joanne Playfiar. Lindholm & Nicholson had a good win against Lea & Playfiar, taking the first set 7-6 in a tie-break and the second 6-3 but Fowler & Partridge were unable to quite get enough games against Allen & Wright to win the match despite an improved performance, their 4-6 3-6 loss just falling short of the score needed.  In the end it made no difference to the final positions as Caversham were able to put out a strong team in their final match to ensure they avoided releagtion.

With one match remaining, postponed from earlier in the summer, our Mixed 1 team travelled to Wokingham on a Wednesday evening to play their 3rds and won by 10 games after a 2-2 draw.  Mark Lardner teamed up with Jenny Sheppard and they found themselves up against a strong first pair in Steve Edwords & Karen Fowler.  Despite a close battle it was the home pair who prevailed 7-5 6-4 but, on the other court, Mark Callaghan, playing with Emma Knowles in her first match for Wokingham, crushed Ollie Bryant & Gwen Barrett 6-1 6-0 to put the Crows side ahead on games.  Lardner & Sheppard were only slightly less convincing against Bryant & Barrett, winning 6-0 6-2 and it was left to Callaghan & Knowles to see if they coul clinch all three points against Edwords & Fowler.  They only just missed out on the first set, losing it 6-7, but, with the home pair upping their game, lost the second 0-6.  Nevertheless, it was a good performance with the Crowthorne side winning by 10 games to end the season on a high.
