Crowthorne’s Men started their winter campaign with win and two losses last Sunday.
In Division 3, Men’s 1 beat Maidenhead 4 4-0 for the loss of a single set. Both pairs, Russell Finch/David Smith and James Brennan/Matt Paxton, won their first round matches in straight sets although in the case of Brennan/Paxton it was a close 6-4 7-5 against Stephen Smyth/Simon Brittain in contrast to Finch/Smith’s 6-2 6-1 against Warren Roscoe/Steve Hall. In the second round, Finch/Smith were made to work a bit harder, beating Smyth/Brittain 6-2 7-6 while Brennan/Paxton slipped up against Roscoe/Hall after a 6-0 first set to lose the second 4-6 before taking the deciding tie-break 10-5.
In Division 4, Men’s 2 had a tricky encounter on Royal Berkshire’s wet outdoor astroturf, losing 0-4. Details when available…
In Division 6W, Men’s 3 switched their match at Shinfield to play at home in order to avoid an unpopular 12:30 start, but finished up losing 1-3. Brett Venter was playing his first match for the club partnering Mike Smith, and their first set against the visitors’ second pair, Stuart Beck/Diptendra Ghosh was bizarre, with 11 successive breaks of service before Venter held at 6-5 to claim the set 7-5. The second was equally close and went 7-5 to the visitors before Smith/Venter claimed the tie-break 10-5. It was a different story on the other court where Steve Stow/Simon Pestell met the talented first pairing of Peter Bechtold/Noel Da Costa and lost in straight sets. In the second round Stow/Pestell found that the opposition had been warmed up by their long encounter with Smith/Venter and, despite their best efforts were unable to break through, losing 5-7 3-6 while Smith/Venter were losing 1 and 0.
