Another tough weekend for our men’s teams with a total of 2 points from a possible 9 despite some very close matches.
In Division 3, our 1st team entertained unbeaten Caversham 3 and pushed them all the way despite the final result being 0-4. They were unlucky not to gain at least a point against a team that included three players from Spain, with James Brennan & Russell Finch losing both of their rubbers on a deciding tie-break and John Phillips & Chris Torkington losing one rubber on a deciding tie-break and the other 6-7 5-7.
In Division 4, Men’s 2 were away to Bracknell and, although Jim Hawes & Matt Paxton were able to win their first rubbber 6-3 7-5 against Robert Thompson & Adrian Draffin, they lost against Andrew Speight & John Ladbrook by a similar score. Vince Brooks & Simon Pestell were somewhat outside their comfort zone in this division, losing both rubbers in straight sets to make it 3-1 to the home team.
Our only success was in Division 6W where Men’s 3 faced BCS 3 away in Sonning and managed a 2-2 win. After a slow start Andy Stone & Chris Hughes beat the home number 2 pair John Dunford & Mark Elliot 6-4 6-1 but Mike Smith & David Stone just couldn’t crack the tough partnership of Rupesh Ahluwalia & Brendan Togher, losing 4-6 4-6. Smith & Stone started well in the second round, taking the first set 6-1 and, despite slipping from 5-1 ahead, won the second 6-4. Meanwhile, Stone & Hughes were involved in a marathon for the final rubber and the extra point but eventually lost 6-7 6-7.
