Crows’ Men’s 1 had a trip to Maidenhead to play their 4th team in Division 3 last Sunday on wet perforated rubber courts and they were unlucky not to come away with at least a point, every rubber being close. Matt Paxton & Jon Blatchfors lost a close first set 6-7 against Anthony Willison & Craig Thomson then lost the second set 3-6. Meanwhile Russell Finch & David Smith were beating Fernando Alvarez & Dave Scarborough 6-4 6-4 to make it exactly level after the first round. In the second round Finch & Smith were neck and neck against Willison & Thomson until a service break gave the home side a chance to move away to win 7-5 6-2. Paxton & Blatchford went the distance against Alvaro & Scarborough, losing the first set 3-6 but winning the second 6-4 before losing the tiebreak. So no points in a match where they deserved more.
It was also a close match for the 2nds who played Home Park at home in Division 5E, but, this time, both tie-breaks went to the Crows. Jim Hawes & Chris Torkington lost their first set 3-6 against Mark Shelmerdine & Matthew Goff but won the second 6-1 and went on to win the deciding tiebreak. Vince Brooks & David Stone also went the full distance against Luke Beckley & Phil Curry winning 6-3 3-6 1-0. Hawes & Torkington had a straightforward 6-3 6-3 win in the second round and it didn’t matter that Brooks & Stone lost 4-6 4-6 because the match was won.
