Steve Stow and Tony Pillai met Mark Callaghan and Alison Nicholson in the Handicap Doubles Final on Sunday morning at 10:00. The pairs were deemed to be equal so hadicaps were both zero and the target was 10 points in each of the the best of 9 tie-break match.
In the umpires chair, tournament organiser and Men’s Captain, Russell Finch, was in charge of a match in which every one of the 9 first-to-ten tie-breaks was 10-7 or closer. Mark & Alison got off to a good start with a 10-7 win but Steve & Tony came straight back winning the next two games 10-8 and 10-9. Mark and Ali levelled with another 10-7 but Steve & Tony went ahead 3-2 on games with another 10-8 win. Mark & Ali levelled again with a 10-8 and went into the lead winning the 7th game 10-7. At 9-8 to Mark & Alison in the 8th game, Tony’s volley hit the top of the net and dribbled over to make it 9-9 and the next point went to him and Steve to win the game 10-9. So, on into the final game. By this time it was expected that it would go the full distance and so it did with Mark and Alison coming out on top 10-9 to take the match by 5 games to 4.
