Caversham always turn out good teams and their 3rd team who visited us last weekend for the match against our 1sts in Division 3B was no exception. However, the Crows were unlucky not to come away with all 3 points with three matches going to a deciing tie-break, but had to settle for just 1.
Chris Torkington & Tina Stern had a great start against Christopher Bell & Elisabeth Andersson, wiining the first set 6-3. They lost the second 4-6 but recovered to win the decider. Mark Callaghan & Jenny Sheppard found that the visiting second pair Matthew Bettany & Judy King were too strong but they put up a good fight, losing 3-6 4-6.
However, they came back brilliantly from a set down against the first pair, winning 3-6 6-4 1-0. Torkington & Stern were also to find the Bettany/King combination to be the stronger pair, losing the first set 1-6 and, although they won the second 6-4, they lost the decider and the game was lost by a set.
Our 2nd team had a potentially tricky visit to Berkshire County Sports to play their 2nds in Division 4B. This was a very close match but the Crows team came away with 2 points having won by just 2 games.
Richard McCully & Ravinder Norman were too strong for John Dunford & Helen Dacre and they took the first set 6-1 before taking the second 6-3 to give the Crows a lead. Steve Stow & Annie Atkins put in a strong performance against Brendan Togher & Sarah Quant and, although they lost 3-6 4-6, those games would prove to be vital in the final reckoning.
McCully & Norman nearly slipped up in the first set against Togher & Quant but they recovered to take it 7-5 and swept through the second 6-1 to give the Crows a good chance of winning the match. Dunford & Dacre needed a good performance against Stow & Atkins to clinch the win for BCS but the Crows pair battled well despite losing 3-6 1-6, and their 4 games were enough to ensure the 2 points went to Crowthorne.
