Three teams were in action over the weekend with a win for Ladies 2 on Saturday and a win and a loss for the Men on Sunday.
Ladies’ 2 played their much postponed match against Purley on Saturday against a team that could only put out 2 players, thereby ensuring at least 2 points for the home side.
Alison Nicholson & Jenny Partridge made short work of the away pair, Elaine Marshall & Sue Davies, winning the first set 6-0 but having a bit more to do in the second which they won 6-4. Penny Hemingway & Maddy Dunckley found life a bit tougher when their turn arrived to go on court and they lost the first set 2-6. However, they battled back well to take the second set 7-5 and win the deciding tie-break, making it a 4-0 victory.
The 3 points puts the team in with a chance of promotion from Division 8 with a match to play.
On Sunday, Men’s 1 entertained Twyford 1 at home in Division 3 and their 4-0 win ensures their promotion to Division 2, ahead on rubbers although level on points with Royal Berkshire to whom they lost on an alien wet carpet surface a month ago,
John Phillips & Jon Blatchford started with a fine 6-3 6-4 win over Twyford’s top pair, Paul Smith & Tim Ward, while David Smith & Chris Torkington were beating John Anderson & Gerard Stewart 7-5 6-4. Anderson & Stewart stood no chance in the second round as Phillips & Blatchford won 6-0 6-1 and Smith & Torkington completed the 4-0 win with a 5-7 6-3 1-0 win against Smith & Ward.
The 2nds travelled to Twyford to play their 3rds in Division 5E. Their 1-3 loss leaves them a point behind Maidenhead 5 who take the single promotion spot.
Matt Paxton & Russell Finch, still nursing an injured elbow, started well, winning 6-3 6-2 against Ponraj Ranasubbu & Jonathan Noy but Jim Hawes & Vince Brooks went down 6-7 2-6 against Rupesh Ahluwalia & Andy Vyronos. With Hawes & Brooks unable to make any impression on Ranasubbu & Noy, losing 1-6 3-6, it was left to Paxton & Finch to try to rescue a point from the remaining rubber. They lost the first set 3-6 against Ahluwalia & Vyronos but came back in the second to win it 6-3 only to lose the deciding tie-break.
