Almost “Deja Vu” for O55s against Caversham Park

Last year their was a match against Caversham Park in the O45’s League that went to 4 deciding tie-breaks, 2 wins for each team, and finished with a shootout due to the games score being 42-42.  Caversham Park won that one but this year’s encounter was in the O55’s league and, with five players from last year’s match taking part, it was bizarrely similar but ended in a win for the Crowthorne team.  Click here for the 2016 match…

Both pairs started well, Jim Hawes & Adrian Draffin winning their first set 6-1 against Rak Bhandari & Paul Flood while Vince Brooks & Mike Smith were winning theirs by the same score against Tony Flood & Richard Ormerod.  Both pairs had a dip in form in the second set, although the visiting pairs did play better, but with Hawes & Draffin losing 5-7 and Brooks & Smith losing 3-6, it meant that both matches went to a champions tie-break decider.  Both were won by the Crowthorne pairs so it looked good for a win for the home side.

Hawes & Draffin outclassed Flood & Ormerod 6-0 in their first set in the second round but it was Brooks & Smith who were outclassed on the other court by Bhandari & Flood who won 6-1.  Brooks & Smith fought back to win the second set 6-2 and force the third champion’s tie-break of the night which was won by Bhandari & Flood who managed to raise their level back to that of the first set.  These 4 were sitting down enjoying their post-match refreshments by the time Hawes & Draffin fought back from a deficit to square the second set at 5-5 but then lose it 5-7 to Flood & Ormerod.  The tie-break decider was close and, although the home pair went into a lead, the away duo fought back until Hawes was serving for the match at 9-8.  The watching Crows pair breathed a sigh of relief as he put in a solid service and the return sailed out to make it a 3-1 win for Crowthorne.
