Club sessions and playing standards

Club Sessions are those times when there will normally be a committee member or senior club member present to organise the players into sets. Members can just turn up during these times and can mix in and get a game without having to make prior arrangements. It is at these regular, organised sessions that the majority of members play their tennis.

Below is a description and summary of the regular weekly club sessions. If you are uncertain which club session to attend, click on the Ability Guide (right). Ignore the Ratings but look at the descriptions of Starter, Recreational and Intermediate.

Beginners & Improvers Club Night       Mon 7:30 - 10:00

Standard: Starter
The Beginners & Improvers club night follows the coaching on Monday nights and runs from 7:30 - 9:00. Our coach runs the session and helps you put into practice what you have learnt in the coaching. This is free! (except for £1 when floodlights are used).

Improvers Club Night       Wed 6:30 - 10:00

Standard: Recreational
The Improvers club night on Wednesday from 6:30 was originally introduced to provide a stepping stone from the Monday club session. However, it has also developed into a club session for those who are less competitive than those who attend some of the other sessions as well as for those who have played before but are a bit rusty.

Friday Evening Session       Fri 6:30 - 10:00

Standard: Recreational and higher

This is an all inclusive session where you may well find beginners, improvers and team players. The emphasis is on enjoyment so don't panic if you think you won't be up-to-the-mark as weaker players are usually paired with the better players to make the sets as even as possible.

Club Afternoons       Tues & Thurs 2:00 - 4:00

Standard: Recreational and higher

This is where you can enjoy social tennis and a cup of tea and cake. The average age maybe a little higher at these sessions but don't be fooled, you'll still get some feisty tennis!

Tuesday Evening Club Sessions        Tues 6:30 - 10:00

Standard: Intermediate and higher
Tuesday evening is probably the strongest of the Club Sessions, although Thursday night, match practice, obviously attracts the club's best players. Play is competitive whilst still having fun.

Thursday Match Practice        Thurs 6:30 - 10:00

Standard: Intermediate and higher
Match Practice Night provides an opportunity for the selected pairs for the next weekend's matches to practice together against stiff opposition under match type conditions, plus a chance for other members to show what they can do and give them a opportunity to get into the teams. Anyone is welcome to come on Match Practice Night, however the organiser will be aiming to arrange competitive sets and those playing in the next league matches will get top priority, followed by those able to provide stiff opposition. For instance, if there's a Mixed match the following weekend, the emphasis will be on Mixed Doubles and providing the team with a good workout so all selected players should try to attend. For the first hour, it is like a normal club session with players mixing in as they arrive. However, at 7:30 a whistle is blown and the Captains organise the players into fours giving those playing in matches at the weekend precedence. Normally there will be enough courts for everyone but on the odd occasion, if there are a lot of match players and other stronger players present, it is possible that weaker players may not get a game.

Note: At match practice new balls are normally provided and these, along with those used in home matches, are recycled through subsequent club sessions. Match players pay for these balls through the £2 match fee charged to all members representing the club in local league matches.
