Up until 2001 the club had preferred prospective Adult members to be reasonably competent at the game so that they could join in club sessions without the need to have coaching.

However, from 2001 we started accepting complete beginners as full members for the first time. We reckon you are a beginner if you would be an 11.3 or 11.2 under the new (post October 2003) LTA Ratings scheme. 11.3 means "new to the game", 11.2 means "new to the game and beginning to develop basic strokes through playing drills and points". Once you get to 11.1 you are "able to sustain a rally and play games and have knowledge of the basic rules and scoring" at which point you should be able to join in confidently at club nights.

Beginners get some free coaching included in the membership fee, we have a Beginners & Improvers club night on Mondays, after adult coaching, with the coach in attendance to help you with your game and, just started this season, Improvers club night on Wednesdays. Coaching for adults has been available for several years but now we want to encourage you to join the club and get the opportunity for more play than just a weekly coaching session.

See the Playing Times page for more details of the club's weekly tennis timetable and how to choose the club sessions which are best for you.
