The third annual Millendreath Cup tournament was held on 1st May with players entered from Bisham Abbey, Marlow, Iver Heath and RSF as well as a large contingent from Crowthorne. With 20 players entered, each pair played 5 matches and the top two pairs battled it out in a final. Chris Wise & Stuart White (RSF) reached the final for the 2nd year running but the top Crowthorne pairing of Andy Fryatt & Dominic Evan-Hart wrested the trophy from their grasp in a tense match. So the trophy that Andy had presented in 2008, and named after the Cornish Village where his late father used to live, returned to Crowthorne for the first time. In 3rd place were Norman Bhargava & Marco Maltini (Bisham Abbey) and 4th were Mike Smith & Jim Hawes (Crowthorne).

The second running of the Millendreath Cup took place on Saturday 2nd May at Crowthorne Tennis Club with players from Bisham Abbey, RSF, Iver Heath and High Wycombe as well as a large contingent from the home club. This is a Men's Doubles event which was introduced in 2008 by Crowthorne's Men's Team Captain, Andy Fryatt. Milleandreath is a small village in Cornwall where Andy's late father used to live.

Blessed with blue skies and sunshine, in total contrast with last year's torrential rain, each pair played 4 sets with the best two pairs playing a final. The conditions were ideal for good tennis and some top class rallies were seen on all four courts. Andy Fryatt presented the winners, Chris Wise and Stuart White (both RSF), with the Millendreath Cup, Chris winning for the second year running. Andy Fryatt, playing with Andy Ackrell (High Wycombe), were runners-up, Marc Ashworth and Dom Evan-Hart (both Crowthorne) were third and Lee Williams (Crowthorne) and John Stephenson (Iver Heath) were fourth.

Crowthorne Tennis Club hosted the Millendreath Cup, the first of a new annual Men's Doubles Closed Tournament on Saturday 29th March, involving players from Iver Heath, RSF, Thame, Bisham Abbey and Old Basing tennis clubs as well as players from Crowthorne. The 24 players completed two round robin matches, followed by a knockout stage and, despite the strong wind and frequent downpours, there was some excellent tennis in addition to some comical interludes brought about by the appalling conditions. Tournament organiser Andy Fryatt presented the Millendreath Cup to the winners, Chris Wise (RSF) and Simon Brenchley (Old Basing), who beat Mark Watson & Dave Green (Iver Heath). Two Crowthorne pairs finished in joint third place, Jim Hawes & Mike Smith and Dom Evan-Hart & Rupert Sanderson.

On Friday 36 members and friends gathered in the Pavilion and were held spellbound as Richard from Majestic Wines, regaled us with information and anecdotes about wine and wine-tasting. We started just looking at the wine and learnt about the watery edge and the legs, from which we could judge the age and alcoholic content. Then a quick swirl of the glass and in with the nose to get the aroma ranging from cut grass, seaweed, mollasses, tobacco, honey, blackberries, cherries... and more besides. Finally the tasting itself plus a good deal of spluttering as we attempted to suck in air with the wine and sloosh it around the mouth to get the subtleties of the taste and to see whether or not it followed the nose, and whether it opened up with more flavours as time passed. I have to say not a great deal of spitting took place, but a lot of swallowing! Some wine did get poured away, mainly by those having to drive home! The night was rounded off with a raffle that raised Ł65 for Majestic's current charity.
